South Downs Sauna Lewes gains official British Sauna Society accreditation

South Downs Sauna Lewes in the sunshine.

We’re thrilled to say our new woodland sauna, South Downs Sauna Lewes, has been recognised by the British Sauna Society as an approved operator, meeting national standards for authentic, high-quality sauna experiences. This certification grants us an approved spot on the official UK Sauna Map

For us, this recognition is about more than just a badge, it reflects our commitment to creating a safe, welcoming and restorative space for our community to slow down, reconnect and experience the benefits of authentic sauna culture. From the atmosphere we create to the standards we uphold, every detail is carefully considered to ensure your experience feels grounding, calming and truly memorable.

Anni Townend and Simone Thorn, co-creators of South Downs Sauna Lewes.

Born from a love of nature, slow living and meaningful connection, South Downs Sauna was created by Anni Townend & Simone Thorn as a place to pause, reset and reconnect. Nestled within the landscape of the South Downs, the sauna experience brings together heat, stillness, fresh air and beautiful surroundings to support wellbeing in its simplest form.

We’re excited to offer private bookings for guests of The Grain Store Lewes and The Studio. And a warm welcome to walkers and cyclists exploring the South Downs Way, as well as visitors from the local area.

A unique sauna experience

A community sauna set in a tranquil woodland space near the South Downs Way, South Downs Sauna Lewes offers a Finnish-style sauna experience designed to support wellbeing through the simple, restorative ritual of heat and stillness.

The venue comprises a Finnish wood barrel sauna and a secluded outdoor area with a refreshing drench bucket, a copper shower, a fire pit and seating area under a canopy of trees.

At the heart of the sauna experience is löyly, the rising steam created when water meets hot stones, enhanced with organic aromatherapy to deepen its sensory and restorative effects. It also incorporates salt inhalations and gentle whisking, a traditional ritual using birch or oak branches to softly tap, sweep and revitalise the skin.

And after the sauna, you can enjoy a hot or cold drink around the fire pit and soak up the views of the rolling South Downs.

A moment of warmth and calm.
